Research Focus

The goal of the Population Genomics Group (PGG) is to understand the evolutionary dynamics of genomes at population level using computational approaches, and to bridge evolutionary history and genomic medicine. Currently, PGG is focusing on analysis of genetic structure, inference of human genetic history, detection of natural selection, mapping genes underlying complex diseases in human populations, and identifying the differentially expressed genes among populations. A new focus is to study allele-allele interaction and gene-gene interaction in recent admixed populations.

Biography
Dr. Shuhua Xu is professor of human population genetics and Principal Investigator of Population Genomics Group at the CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology. He has been recently appointed to a five-year term position of Max-Planck Independent Research Group Leader. He received his PhD at Fudan University; his scientific research has focused on human population structure, local adaptation and complex trait gene mapping. Dr. Xu has authored many scientific papers published in Science, PNAS, The American Journal of Human Genetics, Genome Research, Human Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology and Evolution, the PLoS and the BMC series. Dr. Xu is the recipient of a number of awards for young scientists: Top 100 National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award in China; Chia-Si Lu Scholarship of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Sanofi Aventis (SA)-SIBS Young Faculty Award (France); Life Science Award, MEIJI Dairies Corp (Japan); Shanghai Rising-Star Award, bestowed by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. He recently also received 1st Class Prize of Natural Science Award, Ministry of Education.
