Professor Xu Yangsheng received his BS and MS degrees in Zhejiang University in 1982 and 1984, respectively. He pursued further studies in University of Pennsylvania and received his PhD degree in 1989. Thereafter, he worked on robotics at Carnegie Mellon University from 1989 to 1997, and joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a faculty member in 1997, where he is currently Professor of Automation and Computer-Aided Engineering. He served as Department Chairman (1997-2004), Vice Director of Shenzhen Advanced Integration Technology, CAS/CUHK (2006-present), Assistant to Vice-Chancellor (2006-2008), and Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (2008-2011). He is currently the Pro-Vice-Chancellor in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Robotics and intelligent systems
Professor Xu's research includes space robotics, robot dynamics and control, intelligent systems, human-machine interface, and electric vehicles. Ever since 1987 in Carnegie Mellon University, he has developed over 30 robots and intelligent systems, including self-mobile space manipulator (SM2), single wheel robot, modularized lunar robot, and share-controlled robot, etc. More recently, he has been developing service robots, wearable interfaces, and intelligent hybrid electric vehicles. He has led over 30 R&D projects funded by the government and industry. His research has resulted in over 300 publications including three monographs and one edited book.
He was elected as Academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of International Academy of Astronautics, Fellow of IEEE, Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science, and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
