Direction:

Research interests:

Over the past decade, the emphasis of my research has been on the Permian and Carboniferous brachiopods, a group of marine shelled invertebrate organisms, particularly abundant during the Palaeozoic Era, and Permian conodonts, which are extinct chordates resembling eels, classified in the class Conodonta. My work has been conducted in China, Russia, Japan and Australia, respectively under the sponsorship of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Deakin University of Australia, and Niigata University of Japan etc. Work with specialists in the above institutes/universities has greatly broadened my research areas and established active collaborative work with international colleagues.

Main areas include: (1) High-resolution Permian biostratigraphy and global correlation; (2) constructing the pattern and dynamics of the end-Permian mass extinction; (3) doing systematics, morphology and palaeoecology of the Permian brachiopod faunas and establishing the global database from the Devonian to Triassic; (4) applying methods/statistics, especially multivariate methods, for solving problems of palaeobiogeography. My work on this area has included not only studies of more regional phenomena but also analysis of global patterns.
