Research Interest:

More than 4000 purified compounds from animals, plants, and halobios were screened for anti-HIV-1 activity. Many natural lead compounds, such as xanthohumol (from the hop Humulus lupulus.), concentricolide (from Daldinia sp.), scutellarin (from Erigeron breviscapus (Van.) Hand–Mazz.), sulphated polyhydroxysterol (from the marine sponge Halichondria rugosa Ridley & Dendy), rutin sulphate (from Sophora japonica), trichobitacin (from the root tubers of Trichosanthes kirilowii), zinc complex of baicalin (baicalin extracted from the Chinese medicinal plant Scutellaria baicalensis), lectins (from marine invertebrates), maxinin (from the skin secretion of the Chinese red belly toad Bombina maxima.), the rare-earth compounds La(NO3)3.6H2O and Ce(NO3)3.6H2O), and the venom L-amino acid oxidase (TSV-LAO; from Trimeresurus stejnegeri) have shown strong anti-HIV activity. One of our main interests is to establish key technologies for anti-HIV drug screening in order to identify new anti-HIV drugs from chemical compounds or natural medicinal products. We are also interested in attaining our own patent rights to any of these compounds that we identify. The newly established NHP models would also facilitate future studies of HIV/SIV pathogenesis.
Our BSL-3 laboratory was built in 1995. Supported by the CAS and Kunming Institute of Zoology, we established one of the few ABSL-3 laboratories in 2003. HIV and SIV are related lentiviruses that cause a similar syndrome in their respective hosts. We have successfully infected Rhesus monkeys with SIV and SHIV. These and other non-human primate AIDS models are important for studying HIV/AIDS pathogenesis and for evaluating vaccines and anti-HIV drugs. We can now focus our research on anti-HIV drugs, vaccines, and HIV pathogenesis at the levels of cell and animal models.
