Education and Appointments:

Academician Ye Danian was born in July 1939 in Heshan City, Guangdong Province. He served as a member of the eighth, ninth and tenth CPPCC Standing Committee, Central Committee of China Democratic League, vice chairman of Beijing NLD. Ye Danian has been mainly engaged in the study of mineralogy, crystal chemistry and mineral materials. He studied mineralogy and petrology at the Geology Department of Beijing Geological Institute, where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1962. His master’s degree was obtained at the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in September 1966. Since then, he has worked in the Institute of Geology and Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences where he served as a research assistant, assistant researcher, associate professor and research fellow. In 1991, he was elected the geology academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

For many years, Ye Danian has worked with the relationship between optical properties and crystal structures of minerals. He found many qualitative and quantitative laws, which opened a new field of structured optical mineralogy. The "structured optical mineralogy " written by Ye Danian is the first monograph in this area in the world. For this he won the second prize of Natural Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1986. From 1968 to 1975, he had engaged in petrology studies and put forward the theories of "moderately super-cold crystallization", the batching calculation methods of "residual silicon index", and assay methods of microstructure and crystallinity. In 1978 he was awarded the National Science Conference Award. He has a gift for X-ray identification methods of minerals, which resolved the problems of the rock-forming mineral identification such as plagioclase, clinopyroxene, garnet and hornblende. His monograph "X-ray powder method and its application in petrology" promoted the study of mineralogy and petrology. In 1976 he found C-eclogites and 3T phengites in the Dabie Mountain, which demonstrated their significance in the geotectonics of China, and caused a far-reaching impact on the later studies of ultra high-pressure metamorphism. Ye Danian has been dedicated to researching the applied technology of ceramic mineralogy and cement mineralogy for many years. In 1986 he was awarded the Third Prize of Technology Progress for the study of zeolite cement. His study extended to the categories of statistics crystal chemistry and random granular crystal packing in 1990s. He established the "The law of conservation of the average occupying volume of the oxygen ions in Earth sphere ", "Molecular volume additivity" theorem, the law of "Multi-stage random accumulation constant". In recent years, he has been committed to researching "Cities symmetrical distribution and urbanization trends forecast ", which has been widely noted in newspapers and magazines. Also, many relevant provinces, cities and universities have invited him to give the famous lecture "Geography and Symmetry". His monograph "Cities symmetric distribution and urbanization trends in China ", which caused a great sensation at home and abroad, which has become important reference opinions to develop urbanization construction plan in China. Moreover, he has published more than 170 papers and a number of academic monographs. He has also enthusiastically devoted himself to the cultivating and educating of graduate students.
