1976年毕业于台湾东海大学生物系,1982年获得加拿大英属哥伦比亚大学遗传学博士。1986-1991年在罗彻斯特大学生物系任助理教授及副教授,1991年任芝加哥大学生态和演化系副教授,1998年任教授及系主任,2008年6月被聘为北京基因组研究所所长。吴仲义教授目前是中山大学长江讲座教授,担任分子系统遗传及演化学 (USA)、遗传学报 (USA)、美国自然学家期刊 (USA)、Genome Biology and Evolution (USA)、基因和遗传系统 (Japan)、动物学报 (China)等期刊副主编。2004年,吴仲义教授被评为中研院院士。自80年代以来一直从事群体遗传学的研究,在物种形成和自然选择这两个演化生物学领域中的基础问题的研究上及在自私遗传因子、分子时钟、X染色体抑制及演化基因组学等领域的研究中做出了独创性的贡献。2005 年之后,吴仲义开启新的研究领域,从microRNA着手解决物种形成的问题。在Science、Nature、PNAS等世界顶级学术期刊上发表论文论文近120篇。

目前的主要研究方向:癌症基因组学研究、miRNA的进化及其与目的基因的共进化研究;中国科学院知识创新工程重大项目,“癌症基因组和蛋白质组研究” 。
物种形成和自然选择是吴仲义在分子演化工作中的主要研究方向。他80%的论文皆是这两大问题的结合,主要贡献是把物种起源研究带到DNA水平上,进而观测自然选择的巨大作用;同时把自然选择研究带到全基因组的层次,否定了分子进化中性学说,也肯定了自然选择的广泛存在。2006年后吴仲义开发了 microRNA的研究,由 microRNA 基因的特质探讨物种起源的微进化机制。同时他在自私遗传因子、分子时钟、X染色体抑制、基因表达及演化基因组学等领域中也做出了独创性的贡献。
物种形成是演化学中最困难的问题。到1990年时?o种化的遗传分析还十分粗糙?o分子研究更是遥不可及。吴仲义1992Nature的论文是种化遗传分析的一个里程碑。此后他的实验室引进大幅革新?o成为一个居于领导地位的研究群体。其主要研究成果常是《自然》/《科学》杂志的评论主题。在1990 到2000的十年中,吴研究室发表一系列30篇论文,定出了物种分化的大体遗传结构。这些论文全在遗传专业的顶尖期刊发表。他在2000年完成的成果,带动了物种形成研究这10年的文艺复兴,同时也为物种形成的分子层次研究奠定了基础。
在分子演化领域中,中性学说已占主导优势20余年(Kimura,1983)。一直以来该学说批判自然选择在分子水平上的重要性。吴仲义2000年Nature的论文与之前的工作阐述了性选择的普遍性。他进而归纳了这个趋势并以数据分析来证明自然选择的广泛性。此观点与现阶段分子演化研究主流学说背道而弛,复苏了因中性学说的兴起而退引的新达尔文主义观点。自然选择作为分子演化主要驱动力量的观点的从新提出,将激发演化学和人类遗传学研究的新主流。吴教授正在著书,系统地探讨自1983年以来遗传学家在自然选择方面的研究进展,并为今后的研究提出了新的方向及目标。
另外,在<<细胞>> 和<<自然>>杂志上,吴仲义发表了有关卫星DNA在减数分裂驱动中作用的论文。这两篇论文解决了减数分裂驱动的一大难题?o也是目前卫星DNA不全是废物的最好证据 。他与李文雄教授合作的工作是分子时钟的研究的一个重要里程碑。其在<<自然>>杂志上发表的另一篇论文则为进化过程中的DNA 双链不对称研究提供了新的思路。近五年来其它学者的研究工作受他这篇论文的影响颇大。最近发表的一篇封面主题论文可望革新我们对于X染色体抑制演化的看法。
