Born in Shandong in November of 1927. Graduated from Department of Mathematics, Tsinghua University in 1948, and elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991.
Resarch directions: algebra (classical groups and geormetry of matrices), combiucatorice (algelraic combinatorics and graph theory), coding theory and cryptography, and finite geometries, etc. His work on “Classed Groups”, jointly with L.K.Hua, was awarded distinguished scientific work by the All China Science and Technology Congress in 1978, so were “A graphical method for solving the transportation problem and its applications” and “The pseudo-random sequences” (jointly with Zongduo Dai, Mulan Liu and Xuning Feng). “The Isomorphism theory of classical groups”, jointly with Hongsui Ren, Zunxian Li, Fu’an Li and Xiaolong Wu, was awarded the Nationl Science Prize of the third degree in 1986, His work on “Algebra and combinatioricns” was awarded the L.K.Hua Prize in 1995, “Shift registler sequences” was awarded the Chinese Academy Science and Technology Progress Prize of the first degree in 1987, His work on Finite Geometry of Classical Groups and Its Application was awarded the Chinese Academy Natural Science price of the first degree in 1997. He also won the Guanghua Foundation prize of the first degree in 1995. He is the honorable chief editor of <Algerbra Colloquium > , editor of the <Annals of Combinatorics>, <Finite Fields and Their Applications>, and <Journal of Combinatorics , Information and Systems Science>”; He has been editors of Science in China, Kexue Tongbao, Shuxue Xiubao, and Discretle Applied Mathematics. He published more than 140 Vesearch papers, 20 popular papers, and 22 books.
